The centre is a man who has lived a long time, but has not 'lived'. Banished by his daughters, he learns what it means to be merely mortal through losing power and status. In succumbing to madness, he becomes human. Witness to the change are loyal servants Kent and Gloucester, together with Lear's shadow, his beloved and strangely familiar Fool. In parallel, the bastard son of a noble family brings his own father down. But the brother he has destroyed on the way will become both nemesis and potential saviour, at world's end. Joining Lear and his followers in the wilderness, Edgar will rise from his betrayal to become the last hope, at the end of times.
