CELEBRATING FIFTY YEARS OF OUTDOOR SHAKESPEARE
As a community group, MDCC started performing in Moseley from 1961 with a production of Macbeth in the gardens of the old Toc-H building. From there, it grew to take on performances at other outdoor venues in and around Birmingham, including the Botanical Gardens and Lichfield Festival. As one of the few and, maybe, first amateur groups to run an ambitious touring schedule of outdoor performances, the company has seen a fair number of its members turn professional as the rigours of the run offer their own kind of informal training. The company is continually regenerated, membership-wise, through its longstanding policy of holding genuine ‘open auditions’ at the beginning of each production year, designed to attract both current members and experienced actors new to MDCC, as well as those who are new to acting and show the potential to take on a role. Sometimes brand new actors are entirely right for a major part.
